I dream of ice cream - in my daydreams, during deep REM sleep, and quite often while I should be doing other things. I am constantly wishing I was somewhere with scoops of that sweet and creamy, frozen form of happiness. But I can’t be blamed; it’s in my DNA. My mother, Rosie, introduced me to the as-yet-unmatched elation of eating an ice cream cone when I was very young, and it quickly became our go-to bonding activity. Some of our most pivotal moments have taken place over a shared cone of butter pecan or raspberry chocolate truffle at our favorite farms in Connecticut, where I was raised.

For me, it’s never been hard to explain the appeal; ice cream has always had my respect. Enjoying it is an activity rarely carried out alone or idly. It’s not a cookie. It’s not a bag of chips. It can’t be stolen from a cabinet, perfunctorily plunked into a lunchbox on your way out the door.

By nature, eating ice cream requires planning, foresight. It demands certain conditions that can’t be created on the fly. That’s what makes it share-worthy. If you’re going to go through the trouble of visiting the scoop shop, chances are you’re probably going to bring along a buddy. You’re going to stand in line together and talk about flavors you’d like to try. The ones you think you’ll get or the ones you’ve had in the past. Maybe you’ll consider sharing a sundae or debate whether to have sprinkles or fudge sauce or whipped cream. Once you’re served, you’ll probably trade opinions on how or why it’s so good—the discussion being integral to the overall ritual.

And because of this obligation to create a conducive environment, eating ice cream is more likely to be timeless, memorable—a special event, often associated with feelings or experiences, good times or bad. Maybe you plowed through a pint of cookie dough the first time you were dumped. And maybe that same flavor was there to help you celebrate scoring a new job.
